Tips on Moving to Texas
Texas is easily one of the largest, most culturally diverse, and beautiful places in the country. If you’re planning to move to the Lone Star State, then you’re in for a treat. From the people and scenery to the food and culture, Texas is sure to impress.
But before you pack your bags, you should really consider learning more about your new home. To help you out, here are a few things that you’ll want to know before your big move.
- Texans are really friendly. The name “Texas” actually comes from the Caddo Indian word “taysha” meaning ally or friend, so the fact that the typical Texan is usually gracious, polite, and hospitable shouldn’t be that surprising. If you’re planning to move there, you should expect (and reciprocate) a lot of waves, howdys, and open doors.
- Everything’s bigger in Texas. You may hear this saying tossed around a lot, but there’s actually some truth to it. A lot of things in the Lone Star State are obnoxiously large and for good reason. Geographically speaking, Texas is about twice the size of Germany and thrice the size of the United Kingdom. Being larger than many countries around the world, the state certainly has more than enough room for obnoxiously large stuff.
- Don’t mess with Texas. Here’s another pretty common saying that actually has some factual basis. During the mid 1800s, the state was actually called the Republic of Texas. It was an independent sovereign state with its own President, Congress, Supreme Court, and other government offices. So, as you may expect, Texans are very proud of their cultural identity and heritage -- plus, a lot of them have and enjoy guns. Still believe it’s a good idea to mess with Texas? Didn’t think so.
- Football isn’t “just a game”. Never, ever tell a Texan otherwise. Football is so popular in the state that some may even exaggeratingly call it a religion. All kidding aside, however, Texans are just really passionate about football, so don’t call it “just a game” or “just a sport”.
- Boots and pickup trucks. Both of them are a pretty common sight around Texas. In fact, most residents have at least a single pair of boots, which kind of makes them the unofficial state uniform. On the other hand, pickup trucks are preferred because of their handling and performance. In fact, they’re so popular that the state is widely considered as the country’s number one market for truck manufacturers.
