Remote work is driving a move to the suburbs

Location is the top priority for most families when they shop for new homes. But what happens when you take a daily commute to the office out of the equation?

Since the start of the pandemic, the majority of non-essential employees have transitioned to remote work. This brought new challenges as homeowners scrambled to create office space, but also created an opportunity for families to re-evaluate their priorities as they examined their new needs.

At Sandlin Homes, we’re seeing that remote work is driving a move to the suburbs where residents get a little separation from city life and have a lot more room to spread out. And we have some great solutions if you’re leaning that way too.

The numbers

According to a recent survey by The Harris Poll, 75 percent of Americans working from home during the pandemic would prefer to continue that for at least half the time if they have the option. Additionally, 66 percent of respondents said they would consider moving if they had the flexibility to work from home.

Of course, these homeowners will be looking for some very specific elements in their new home like dedicated office space, flexible rooms for work and play and even expanded community amenities that allow for fun close to home.

The location is up for debate as well with 50 percent of people considering a longer commute of up to 45 minutes if they have the option of more frequent remote work according to Zillow. The previous popular vote was for 30 minutes or less.

Your options

Through more than 60 years of building in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Sandlin Homes has adapted its designs to fit trends of the times as well as the individual needs of every family we meet. This has resulted in spacious, flexible floor plans in 18 desirable communities.

It also led to our Build On Your Lot program which allows you to choose your ideal location and we will bring one of our 30 proven floor plans to you. That way you can tailor everything to you including changes to the plans for bonus rooms, study lofts or designated office spaces.

If your current home is not filling your needs, start by taking a look at our quick move-in homes. If you can find one that works for you, we can help you move in the next few months. Or, we can plan a new build if you like a plan or community, but the options aren’t paired right now.
