What to Do around Waxahachie and Weatherford

Waxahachie and Weatherford might seem like unassuming small towns, but you would be surprised at all the interesting ways you could spend time here. The area is a gold mine of history of both fact and legend. You can visit everything from local parks to a Peter Pan statue to a museum that celebrates pioneering. Here’s a list of local favorites.
  1. Chandor Gardens - A small entrance fee covers parking, touring the gardens, and a tour of the home. The gardens are a mix of Chinese and English inspired landscapes that come together to create an oasis where you can spend an enjoyable afternoon.
  2. Peter Pan - Stop by the library on Charles Street to check out the bronze statue of Peter Pan, placed there to honor Weatherford native Mary Martin who starred in the role. The library also displays costumes, musical scores, and other Martin-related memorabilia.
  3. Texas Opry Theater - You don’t have to travel to Nashville to see quality entertainment. The local Opry offers an enjoyable blend of famous celebrities and local talent. Because the venue only seats 500, no matter which seat you choose is the best in the house.
  4. Webb Gallery - First opened nearly two decades ago, this 10,000 square foot gallery displays exhibits like none other in Northern Texas, including a menagerie of toothpick sculptures, each created from several thousand tiny splinters of wood.
  5. Sweet Springs Winery - This is the perfect venue for a special occasion, such as a wedding or corporate event, but it is pretty amazing for a quick trip if you need to kill an afternoon or want to spend a relaxing evening. Your tasting guides will make you feel like regulars, even if it’s your first time visiting. The winery offers a menu of edibles, such as a delicious cheese platter, to nibble on during your visit as well.
  6. Doss Heritage and Cultural Center - This neighborhood gem is sorely under-visited. What it lacks in size it makes up for in substance. The center takes you back through the history of Northern Texas starting with the Native Americans and working forward to celebrities like Mary Martin and her equally famous son, Larry Hagman.
  7. Ellis County Courthouse - The courthouse is a striking bit of architecture, standing at nine stories tall at the top of the clock tower. However, the top of each granite column features sandstone carvings depicting figures rumored to be the result of unrequited love between the carver and the daughter of a boarding house owner.
You might find typical things popular in other towns when visiting the areas of Waxahachie and Weatherford. But as you can see, these towns offer an array of interesting places to visit and things to do that are unlike anywhere else in the world.
