Tips for Moving Into a Brand New Home
Moving into a new home is an exciting adventure, but for some home owners it comes with more stress than they expected. If you thought that packing up and cleaning your old home was where the work ended, then you are in for a big surprise. The key to enjoying your big move is to plan ahead and be prepared.
If you are having a home built, then meet with the builder as soon as possible to work out small details that can save you big headaches once time comes for your family to move in. One change you might want to make during the building process is floors. You might wish to upgrade, for example, to bamboo wood or eco-friendly carpeting.
Another decision you will want to make before moving in is the paint. It is more economical for your family to choose a neutral color before moving in. If you have a son or daughter who has to have their bedroom a certain color, then talk to the builder about having it done before you move in to save you the headache of trying to paint around furniture and moving boxes.
Crown and chair molding is something else you will want to install before moving into your new home. It is much easier to have the builder to install these bits of decorative trim work while the rooms in your new home are empty. The builder and their workers also have the right tools to install the trim correctly the first time.
Before you move into your home, there are a number of others who have already been through it, and the builder is just one of them. This is also true if you are buying a previously owned home. Here are some tips that you can use to gain peace of mind for moving into your new home.
- Get New Locks – Previous owners may have given keys to neighbors or pet sitters. More than one key may be floating around before you buy your home. Get new locks, or have the existing locks rekeyed.
- Install Closet Organizers – You have no idea how nice it is to put everything in its place when you have a place to put it. It makes unpacking quicker, and which allows you to enjoy your new home faster.
- Plan Outlet Placement – Are you going to put a Christmas tree in front of the picture window? Will you need an outlet over the fireplace for a flat screen television? Ask the builder about having these installed before you move in.
