Relocating to DFW? Here’s What You Need to Know

The market in DFW is hot, hot, hot. It's no surprise with the many companies investing millions to relocate their headquarters to cities in and around Dallas and Fort Worth. What brings these companies and new residents to the area? Affordable cost of living, no state income tax, choice of top notch school districts, excellent city services, awesome things to do in DFW, and growing diverse population. Here are tips for relocating to DFW to help you know where to search for new homes in Dallas-Fort Worth and be more prepared to make the big move. Do your research What's important to you? Schools, companies, amenities, entertainment, shopping, some or all of the above? Ask friends and family about the things that are important to you. Don't know anyone? Visit city government websites and read up on the city. Perhaps, one or two will catch your eye. Also check the local newspaper's website. If finding the right school district is important, visit school district websites. GreatSchools is a national nonprofit organization that allows you to search for schools by state, city, school district, or school name. For each school, it provides a rating and community reviews. Move at the right time Most people search for homes and move around the end of the school year or right before the start. It can be harder to find the right home. The area has convertible-friendly temperatures just about year-round. Still, try not to move in the height of summer with temps reaching the 90s and sometimes the low 100s. Yes, it gets hot, hot, hot in the middle of the summer. But not like in other cities where the humidity makes it worse. If you can avoid moving in the middle of summer, it'll be easier since you won't have to deal with the uncomfortable heat while unpacking. Make a list of what to look for in new homes in Dallas-Fort Worth Where to begin? First of all, you have many choices of cities and school districts. Here goes: Allen, Argyle, Arlington, Crowley, Duncanville, Frisco, Grand Prairie, Grapevine, Haslet, Joshua, Little Elm, McKinney, North Richland Hills, Plano, Waxahachie, Weatherford, and more. The cool thing is that you have a diversity of options. Want to live in a small town? Try Little Elm or Haslet. Want to live in a city without the big city challenges? Check out North Richland Hills or Waxahachie. Make a list of your must-haves and don't needs in a home. Do you want a pool and the maintenance that comes with it? How many bedrooms and baths? A two- or three-car garage? Do you want to live in a neighborhood with its own community pool and amenities? Select a DFW home builder Do a search for area builders to see if a couple fit your style and needs. Some companies build homes in multiple communities around DFW. Others only in one or two. Narrow your list to a few candidates and study their websites. It helps to try to find builders working in multiple communities. They're less likely to be biased about one single place.
