Everything is bigger in Texas, right? But how much bigger will the northern part of the state continue to grow? Some claim that if the city continues to grow as it has during the past several years, then by the year 2020, the Dallas area could see between one and two million new residents. Right now only Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago claim higher populations than the Dallas-Fort Worth area, making it the fourth biggest metropolitan area across the United States. Over the past three decades, the population has more than doubled so that the 3 million people of 30 years ago has exploded into a whopping 6.5 million people who call this area home. Why People Are Flocking to Northern Texas Population trends tend to follow the dollar. If there is an opportunity to reap economic rewards in an area, then that is the area where people are going to put down roots. In northern Texas, the potential for economic growth is practically unlimited. This is due to huge corporations such as State Farm, Toyota, and Nebraska Furniture Mart moving into the area. When big businesses move, they bring the opportunity for more jobs which gives people more money to spend. When people have more money to spend, then it creates opportunity for other retail ventures, such as grocery stores. It also creates the opportunity for residential growth, as families moving into the area will need a place to live. Another reason for the projected population boom is the geography that surrounds the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The area can keep growing north as far as the Red River, and east and west until it hits the state line. Depending on how things pan out, this booming metropolis could easily outrank cities like New York or Chicago in population size. Culture and Growth in Northern Texas It is no secret that Mexico, a major Spanish-speaking country, borders Texas to the south. Originally Texas was part of that country, before it declared its independence in 1836. It is only natural that the Latino population will continue to grow, and why shouldn't it? Demographics project that by 2020, Latinos will make up nearly half of the population in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Although some look at this cultural shift as the potential for negative influence, in terms of the growing economy, a multilingual society that embraces a wide range of cultures could be a real boom to the area. This is because cities adapt to cultural changes, which in turn helps the economy.
