More companies than ever are relocating to the North Texas area, and they are bringing their best and brightest employees to the area as well. Many of these people have families with children.  Oftentimes children do not adapt as well to a move as adults. There is a common misconception that moving is more difficult on high school aged children than younger ones. The reality is that no two children handle a move in exactly the same way. Stress can affect different children in different ways based on their unique personalities. Fortunately there are things that parents and guardians can do to help ease the loss children feel when they leave their friends behind in their former hometowns. Here are some tips for helping kids adjust to a new home in the North Texas area: RESEARCH THE AREA – Learn what awaits you in your new hometown. Search resources like Yelp and Travelocity for things that might spark your kids’ interests. North Texas is filled with venues like athletic fields, skateboarding parks, kid-friendly museums, and so much more. FIND A CLUB – Are your kids involved in a group, like scouting or 4-H? Maybe your family is involved with church or another religious organization. Find a group ahead of time and communicate with members of the group to get to know them ahead of time to make the face-to-face meeting easier. EXPRESS ALL THE EMOTIONS – Give your kids time to express all their emotions, whether positive or negative. Your own feelings about moving to North Texas might rub off on your children. Sit down and be honest about some of your emotions, too. It will help your family feel like they are in the move as a unit. KEEP IN CONTACT WITH OLD FRIENDS – Help your kids stay in touch with the friends they will leave behind. If they are old enough, set up a social media account and connect them to their friends. If possible, host a goodbye block party where you take plenty of photos to share before and after the move. Planning to move as a family gives you the benefit of being able to support each other during the transition between your former home and your new one. Communicate with your kids and when they run into a problem during the move, they will be more likely to come to you with it. Once you’re settled into the new community, don’t limit getting involved to your kids. You could join a book club, attend a wine tasting, or attend any number of other events in North Texas. This allows you to open new doors for your entire family to meet new neighbors and friends.
