Exploring Pinterest can be a mixed bag. It can get overwhelming with all the great ideas that make the project look so easy. It's more manageable when you have a project in mind, whether it's a room update or how to better organize your closet.
When you find an idea that looks doable, run it against this list of six design trends showing up on Pinterest and on design websites that aren't practical.
- Wall Stencils
So you search for bedroom ideas. And you see one with a cool wall stencil of geometric shapes. The light bulb goes off. But wait. This is one of those ideas that won't be worth your time. First, it's very hard to make sure the stencil lines up perfectly and keep the hand steady.
On one of the first episodes of the revived "Trading Spaces," a team was tracing stencils on the walls using an overhead projector. It was an ambitious project that resulted in a few flaws. Fortunately, brightened the room and looked smashing. But there were design pros on hand to ensure its success.
- All-White or Light-Colored Decor
The photos on Pinterest tend to be taken right after the work is done. It's also before anyone lives in it and uses the room. So those rooms filled with white, cream, or light gray items look classy and pristine. Such rooms feel peaceful, light, and bright.
This makes a great look for a model home or a store display. Not so much for someone who actually lives in it. It'll be tough for any family with kids or pets to keep it immaculate.
- Dining Benches
Dining benches have been around for decades. However, they're making a comeback. Some homes have a nook with window seating. It's like the corner table with bench seating in a restaurant. If someone needs to get up, others will have to get up to let the person out.
Another option is to have a table with benches in the middle of the room instead of against the wall. Not everyone is savvy about turning around and getting out without disturbing the diners on either side. What's more is that these don't have back support, so they're not comfortable.
- Slipcovers
These are not the slipcovers of the '50s or '60s. They're chic, colorful, and match your style. The thinking is that they'll be easy to remove and throw in the wash. Then, you can put clean slipcovers right back on.
The truth is they're not easy to remove and put back on. If you do manage to slip them on without wrinkles, it won't take long for them to look messy again. Just sit on it and stand up. The slipcovers look like a wrinkly mess.
A better route is to find a high-quality upholsterer. While you won't be able to wash the covers, the furniture will always look sharp.
- Marble Countertops
Short answer: Stick with solid surface kitchen countertops like Corian and Swanstone, granite, or quartz like Dekton and Silestone. Marble countertops, typically Calacatta or Carrara, look amazing. The problem is that they're porous. They make it harder to clean and they can get etching or stained. Marble also requires constant sealing.
The most important thing with kitchen countertops is durability. Stains and spills will happen. Durable countertops don't require maintenance. Leave liquid standing on it too long? It will clean right up without leaving any evidence.
- Metal Tiles
Have you seen photos of rooms that use metal tiles as an accent? They look spectacular. But no one talks about the upkeep. When they're used in a bathroom or in a beachfront home, the metal tiles' beauty won't last long. The moisture and water will eventually tarnish them.
Keeping the tiles perfectly dry will be a lot of work. Metal tiles can work as an accent in a dry space. You have many options for adding a splash with tiles without the upkeep. Skip the metal and the mettle to preserve their original look.
